The papers consist largely of personal and professional correspondence (1908, 1917-1955) of Mitchell, U.S. solicitor general (1925-1929) and attorney general (1929-1933); letters and printed materials relating to his professional committee associations as a lawyer in New York City (1933-1955); personal letters (1871-1891) of his father, William Mitchell, who was an attorney and Minnesota supreme court justice, and of his mother, Frances Merritt Mitchell, containing domestic news; a business account book (1897-1923) of father and son; and travel diaries of Gertrude Bancroft Mitchell (Mrs. William D.) in Canada (1920, 1921), Europe (1913, 1928), and England (1935).
